ServicesStump Grinding
Stump Grinding in Altamonte Springs
A stump left behind after a storm or an old removal trips mowers, draws termites and sends up new shoots. We grind it below the surface, deal with the grindings the way you prefer and leave the ground ready for whatever comes next.

When grinding is the right answer
Pulling a stump out whole tears up a wide circle of yard and often cracks nearby irrigation lines or edging. Grinding works the other way. A rotating cutter wheel chews the stump and its main buttress roots into chips, a few inches at a time, until the wood sits below the soil line. The roots left deep in the ground break down slowly on their own.
Most of our stump work follows a tree that came down in high wind or was taken out after storm damage. Once the trunk is gone, it is tempting to leave the stump for later. A sensible next step is to have it looked at while you are already sorting out the yard, so the area can be leveled, replanted and mowed again.
We are a family-owned company, business licensed and fully insured, which matters when heavy equipment is working a few feet from your home, fence or driveway.
What our stump grinding includes
Utility locate before we cut
We arrange the free Sunshine 811 locate so buried electric, gas and cable lines are marked before the grinder touches the ground.
Grinding below grade
We take the stump down below the surrounding soil, deep enough for topsoil and sod or a planting bed to sit flat over it.
Surface roots followed out
Roots that run across the lawn and catch mower blades are ground along their length, not just at the trunk.
Your choice on the grindings
The chips can stay as a mulch layer in nearby beds or be hauled away. If we haul them, we backfill the hole with clean soil and tamp it.
Care around what stays
We flag sprinkler heads, shield windows and siding from flying chips and protect pavers or edging close to the stump.
Signs a stump should come out
Sprouts around the base
Laurel oaks, camphor and several other common trees push up suckers from a cut stump. Clipping them only slows the regrowth; grinding stops it.
Soft, crumbling wood
A decaying stump is an easy home for termites and wood-boring beetles, and some of them will look for a way toward your home next.
Mushrooms or fungus
Fungal growth on or around the stump means rot is spreading through the root system, and it can move toward healthy trees nearby.
An obstacle in the yard
If you mow around it, trip over it or cannot put a patio, bed or new tree where you want one, the stump is costing you usable space.
Storm-damaged root plates
A tree that tipped in wind can leave a lifted, half-exposed root mass. These are uneven and unstable underfoot and are best ground down and leveled.
How a stump grinding visit runs
- 1
Walkthrough and estimate
We look at each stump, its diameter and root spread, how we can reach it and what sits nearby. You get a clear estimate before anything is scheduled.
- 2
Locate and prep
Utility lines are marked, sprinkler heads near the stump are flagged and loose rock or debris is cleared so nothing gets thrown.
- 3
Grinding
We sweep the cutter back and forth across the stump, lowering it with each pass until we are below grade, then follow the larger surface roots out.
- 4
Cleanup and backfill
Chips are raked out of the lawn and off hard surfaces. The hole is backfilled and leveled, and we talk through sod installation or planting if you want the spot finished.
What affects the price of stump grinding
Stump grinding is priced by the job, not by a flat rate per yard. We see each stump in person first, so the estimate reflects what is actually there. When a storm leaves several trees to clear at once, you can spread the cost out with our financing: amounts reach as high as $100,000, terms run anywhere from two to twelve years, and paying the balance early carries no penalty.
- Diameter and number of stumps
- Wider stumps take longer to grind. Several stumps on one visit are more economical than separate trips.
- Wood type and root spread
- Dense hardwoods like live oak grind slower than pine. Palm stumps are fibrous and grind differently, and a wide spread of surface roots adds time.
- Access to the stump
- When the only way into the backyard is a slim side gate, or the stump sits on a bank or right up against a wall, we may bring a compact grinder and work in slower, more careful passes.
- Grindings and finish
- Leaving the chips in place costs less than hauling them out, backfilling and preparing the spot for sod.
Stump grinding questions
Something not covered here? (407) 269-5989
How deep do you grind the stump?
We go below the surrounding soil line, deep enough that topsoil and sod or a bed will sit level over it. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, tell us at the walkthrough. We will grind wider and deeper and remove more chips, since fresh wood chips in the planting hole can starve a young tree of nitrogen.
Will the roots keep growing after grinding?
For most species, no. Once the stump and root crown are gone, the remaining roots lose their source of growth and decay underground over time. A few vigorous trees can push an occasional shoot, which is easy to clip and usually stops within a season.
Can you grind a stump left from a tree another company removed?
Yes. Many of the stumps we grind were left after storm cleanup by another crew. We can also handle the full job through our tree trimming and removal service if a damaged tree is still standing.
Will grinding damage my sprinkler system?
We mark the heads and lines we can see before we start and work around them. Lines that run directly through a stump's root mass are sometimes already damaged by the roots. If a line is hit, we show you and can repair it through our irrigation service.
Do I need to be home during the work?
Not necessarily. We need clear access to the stump and an open gate. Many homeowners like to be there at the start to confirm what stays and what goes, then let us finish and clean up.

Clear the stump and reclaim the spot
We will walk the yard with you, look at every stump and explain what grinding will leave behind. You will know the cost and the plan for the spot before any work begins.
